Personal Reformulation

Are you working in a helping profession or in a not-for-profit/ volunteer role and want to explore what you ‘bring to your work’? Are you training to qualify as a clinical, forensic or counselling psychologist, therapist, nurse or doctor? Do you find yourself repeating certain patterns of relating which either leave you feeling stuck or impact on your work role with colleagues and / or service users?

Working in a helping profession brings its own unique rewards as well as challenges. A personal reformulation offers you an opportunity to explore and understand what you bring to your work role. The core of a personal reformulation is your own CAT map which we develop together and which you keep with you. The map depicts how you think, feel and behave in certain situations, showing what keeps a particular pattern going. We also identify what you would like to change and possible ways out of these patterns.

Working in a helping profession you may find yourself repeating certain patterns of relating which impact on your work role with service users, peers or colleagues, for example:

  • I withhold from speaking in MDT meetings as I feel I have nothing useful to contribute or I believe that others are more experienced than I am and will dismiss what I have to say.
  • I find it difficult to say no when asked to take on more work as I don’t want to appear unhelpful or not up to the job.

“When you’re born to help others sometimes you forget to help yourself.“

Paula Heller Garland

Helping you to be the best you…

Whilst a personal reformulation is not a personal therapy there may be inevitable overlaps between what you bring to your work role and what might happen in your relationships with others and within yourself, outside of your professional role.

You don’t need to have a working knowledge of CAT to benefit from a personal reformulation. A personal reformulation can be a way of developing your reflective capacity as a practitioner and as such can be a feature of a personal and professional development plan. One outcome of having a personal reformulation is that you may find yourself contemplating a course of therapy.

A personal reformulation session typically lasts for two hours and there is the option of a follow up session about 6-8 weeks after this so we can explore how you thought about or implemented any skills or strategies.
